Product Description

A structured A-line mini skirt handcrafted in Japan from a vintage 100% silk fukuro obi — a formal kimono sash traditionally worn for ceremonial dress.

This piece combines smooth deep teal-blue panels with vintage obi panels featuring ran-giku chrysanthemum motifs, scrolling botanical details, and metallic woven accents in orange, ivory, gold, and soft green tones. The contrast between the calm blue base and the ornate obi textile creates a polished classic-modern look with a distinctly Japanese presence.

Designed with a clean A-line silhouette, the skirt sits beautifully at the high or mid waist and pairs well with tailored shirts, bow-tie blouses, structured jackets, long coats, sheer tights, loafers, heels, or ankle boots.

Because each skirt is made from a carefully selected vintage obi, the pattern placement and textile character are unique to this piece and cannot be reproduced in exactly the same way.

The obi used for this piece was originally woven for formal kimono attire. Its metallic threads, ran-giku chrysanthemum motifs, and traditional Japanese decorative details give the skirt depth, texture, and a ceremonial quality that cannot be replicated in exactly the same way today.

Behind the Craft

This skirt is created by reworking a vintage ceremonial obi into a modern tailored garment.

The original obi textile is carefully selected, cut, and placed so that the woven pattern becomes part of the garment’s structure rather than a surface decoration. Due to the dense structure and delicacy of vintage obi, the fabric requires careful handling, with partial hand-stitching used where necessary to help preserve the integrity of the textile.

The result is a wearable fusion of Japanese formal textile heritage and contemporary tailoring.

Notes on Vintage Textiles

This skirt is made from vintage silk obi fabric. Subtle age-related marks, thread irregularities, slight discoloration, or signs of previous textile storage may remain. These are part of the textile’s history and authenticity.

To preserve the delicacy of the vintage textile, inner seams are finished with zigzag stitching rather than overlock where appropriate, minimizing stress on the fabric and reducing visibility on lighter areas.

Photos are taken with a Nikon DSLR in natural daylight without flash. Actual colors may vary slightly depending on indoor lighting and display settings.
